If you have started pricing up an automatic door, you will have noticed that quotes vary wildly and few firms publish numbers. That is because the honest answer depends on the door type, the building and the survey. This guide sets out realistic UK price ranges so you can budget sensibly before anyone visits site.
The biggest factor in cost is the type of system you choose. Fitting an automatic operator to an existing swing door is the cheapest route, because you keep the door and frame and simply add a motorised arm above it. A full automatic sliding door, by contrast, usually means a new aluminium frame, glazing, track and sensors, so the price climbs quickly.
These figures are supply and install, excluding VAT, and assume straightforward site access. They are a guide, not a quote, as every building differs.
Two identical looking doors can be quoted thousands of pounds apart, and the difference is almost always in the detail. Structural work is the common culprit. If the lintel above the opening cannot carry the operator and header, or the opening needs widening for wheelchair access, builders' work is added before the door installer even starts.
Sensor and safety requirements matter too. Automatic doors in the UK must comply with BS EN 16005, which governs activation sensors, safety sensors on the closing edges and low energy settings. A door onto a busy pavement, common with shop fronts in town centres like Stone or Stafford, typically needs more comprehensive sensing than a door inside a private courtyard. Electrical supply is another one to check: the operator needs a fused spur nearby, and running a new circuit from a distant consumer unit adds cost.
Homeowners usually want automation for accessibility, most often a low energy swing operator on a front or internal door so a wheelchair user can come and go independently. These systems open gently, at a slower speed, and typically cost between £1,200 and £3,000 fitted depending on the door and controls. If the adaptation is for a disabled resident, it is worth asking your local authority about a Disabled Facilities Grant, which can cover some or all of the cost in Staffordshire subject to assessment.
Commercial jobs, such as shops, surgeries, care homes and offices, tend to sit in the higher ranges because footfall demands full speed operators, heavier duty gear and stricter safety sensing. Commercial buyers should also budget for servicing from day one, since regular maintenance is expected under BS EN 16005 and most insurers look for evidence of it.
The installation price is not the whole story. An automatic door is a machine that cycles hundreds or thousands of times a day, so plan for a service visit at least annually, or six monthly on busy entrances. A typical service visit costs somewhere between £90 and £180 per door, and it is money well spent: worn rollers, drifting sensors and tired belts are far cheaper to sort at a service than after a breakdown.
Parts have a finite life too. Expect items like belts, rollers and batteries to need replacing over the years, and budget for an operator lasting roughly ten to fifteen years with good maintenance. When comparing quotes, ask what the warranty covers, how long parts remain available for that model, and what a call-out costs if the door fails outside the guarantee.
Often yes, provided the door and frame are sound, square and not too heavy for the operator. A surveyor will check the hinges, lintel and door weight before confirming, and this route usually costs £1,500 to £3,500 rather than the price of a full new doorset.
A swing door operator on an existing door is normally fitted in a day. A new sliding door system usually takes one to two days on site, plus a few weeks' lead time for the doorset to be manufactured after the survey.
There is no single law that says service your door, but BS EN 16005 and workplace safety duties mean owners of doors used by the public are expected to keep them maintained and safe. In practice that means at least an annual service, with busier entrances checked every six months.
