Automatic doors cost anywhere from under two thousand pounds to well over ten, so a single headline figure won't help you much. Where you land depends on the type of door, whether you keep your existing one and what the building is like. This guide covers the realistic ranges for homes and businesses in and around Stoke-on-Trent, so you can budget sensibly before anyone comes out to survey.
These are rough ranges for supply and fitting on a straightforward job. Every building is different, so treat them as a starting point, not a quote.
The biggest saving usually comes from keeping a door that is already in good condition. Fitting an operator to a solid, well-hung door is far quicker than replacing the whole doorway, which can mean new framing, glazing and making good to brickwork.
Older properties are common across the Six Towns, and plenty of Victorian terraces and former pottery buildings in Burslem, Longton and Hanley have narrow openings, uneven floors or soft brickwork. None of that rules out an automatic door, but it can add time for packing, reinforcing lintels or adjusting thresholds.
Power supply matters too. If there is no fused spur near the door, an electrician will need to run one, which might add a few hundred pounds. Activation method also makes a difference: a simple push pad is cheap, while touchless sensors, remote fobs or links to an access control or fire alarm system cost more.
Finally, the door's weight and use. A heavy fire door or a busy shop entrance opening hundreds of times a day needs a stronger operator than a back door in a bungalow.
Many of our domestic enquiries come from people who find a front or back door hard to manage because of mobility, a wheelchair or a condition that affects grip. A swing door opener is often the most practical answer, and it can usually be fitted in a day with little disruption.
If the door is needed because of a disability, you may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant. In the city this goes through Stoke-on-Trent City Council, while households in Newcastle-under-Lyme or Stone apply to their own borough council. The grant is means-tested for adults and normally starts with an occupational therapy assessment, so it is worth starting that process before you commit to any work. Automatic doors fitted for a disabled person's use can also qualify for VAT relief, so ask your installer about this.
Commercial doors should be installed to BS EN 16005, the safety standard for powered pedestrian doors. It covers things like safety sensors, opening forces and risk assessment, and a competent installer should give you paperwork to show compliance.
If you run a shop, café or clinic in Hanley or elsewhere in the city, the Equality Act means you should make reasonable adjustments so disabled customers can get in. An automatic door is one of the clearest ways to do that. Where the building is listed or sits in a conservation area, check with the council's planning team before changing a shopfront, as that can affect both the design and the timescale.
A reputable installer will want to see the doorway before giving a firm price. Photos can give a rough idea, but a site visit shows the frame condition, power and how the door is actually used.
When comparing quotes, check whether each one includes removal of the old door, electrical work, making good and the first service. The cheapest figure is not always the cheapest job once those extras are added.
An opener on an existing domestic door is usually fitted in a single day. A new sliding shopfront can take two to three days, plus lead time for the door itself, which is often a few weeks.
Most swing door operators can be opened by hand when the power is off, and many sliding doors can be fitted with a battery backup. It is worth deciding on this at quote stage, especially for a home or a fire exit route.
Most manufacturers recommend at least one service a year, and busy commercial entrances often need two. Regular servicing keeps the safety sensors working properly and helps avoid breakdowns that are more expensive to fix.
